If you’re on the fence about whether to get menu cards for your wedding day, allow us to help you settle the debate: Wedding menu cards elevate your tablescape. This chic and thoughtful touch helps build anticipation as guests can delight in reading about the swoon-worthy eats to come.

“I'm always a big proponent of event menu cards. It's such a simple way to add not only an extra pretty layer to your table setting, but the perfect way to integrate color, personality, and continuation of the other design elements from your day,” says Sarah Mastriano, owner of A Lovely Universe Events, based in the New York City tristate area. “Plus, it's informative! Guests appreciate sitting down and seeing their meal options listed right in front of them.”

“Wedding menu cards are great for seated dinners because they allow your guests to know what to expect and also add a beautiful decorative touch to the table," echoes Chloe Campbell, founder and artist for Cloud Studio.

Plus, as Stephanie Teague, the owner and lead planner/designer of Teague Events reminds us, you don’t need to spend a crazy amount of money to incorporate this artful and functional flourish into your nuptials. “I often work with couples with a range of budgets,” she says. “Although I love fully curated and custom paperie, I often try to help my clients on a tighter budget come up with a creative menu option at accessible price points.” Ahead, you'll find options to help guests .

Minted

A suggestion from Mastriano, we’re falling head over heels for this classy and refined menu card from Minted. With a mix of scripted and standard text, it’s got just the right touch of class without being overly stuffy. Personally, Mastriano always appreciates a black and white wedding menu card, but understand you may want to bring some contrast into your tablescape. In that case, green is an especially nice “elegant and simple” option, particularly for autumn weddings.

If letterpress printing is what you seek, it’s hard to find something dreamier and more relatively affordable than this gorgeous option. “Letterpress printing is a beautiful option for menus as it leaves a tactile and visual impression into the paper,” says Teague. “Despite the fact that letterpress is often very expensive, this designer is offering it at a more affordable rate for couples on a budget who are looking for a more upscale look for their dinner menus.” Choose three paper types: 110# cotton card, 220# cotton card, or handmade paper. There’s also a rainbow of letterpress ink colors available (and if you spring for handmade paper, there’s an array of paper colors from neutrals to bold hues, too).

As Campbell highlights, the main character of this card is the bold color choices and retro illustrations. “The handwritten font pulls it all together creating a simple, whimsical menu card,” she says of this wedding menu card from Pulp Templates Company, an Etsy shop that draws her in with its quirky menu card templates. “The cute doodles on the place cards make them feel bespoke but are still cost-effective and the process is super easy,” adds Campbell, elaboration that they have different themed cards for all sorts of weddings: beach, vineyard, and all other types of destination weddings.

Note: You’ll be downloading files and responsible for handling printing on your own, though Pulp Templates Company has partnered with Prints of Love for printing for U.S. customers with 10% off orders of $49 or more with code “PULPTEMPLATES10.”

To round out this selection, we think the Softly Swept Placecards (from $13) and Softly Swept Table Numbers (from $16) are stellar choices.

There’s just something about a smattering of florals on a wedding menu card that we so adore. Whether a subtle outline or a hand-painted watercolor, blooms truly enhance the festive spirit of a wedding. Here, this Zola creation designed in collaboration with Alex Schroeder gives you the look of watercolors (the artist specializes in hand-painted watercolors) without the sticker shock thanks to the wonders of digital reproduction. If you’d like, you can choose your own colors to match other design elements and floral arrangements showcased at your wedding party.

Talk about a one-of-a-kind wedding menu card. Here, Etsy shop Etch This Out creates wood-veneered or acrylic menu cards in circle, square, or hexagon shapes that engrave the evening’s dinner courses into the material. Go for wood if you’re hoping for a more laid-back ambience for your wedding, and acrylic if you’re aiming for a more modern inspiration. With an attention-grabbing menu card like this, you might want to keep other aspects of the place setting more low-key so various design elements aren’t competing for attention or clashing.

Art Deco never looked more magnificent in menu card form, ladies and gents. This foil-pressed wedding menu card features a geometric design on the left while still providing sufficient room to describe all the delectable fares you will indulge in on your wedding day. Note: If foil-pressed isn’t for you, you can request this design without that addition or in a letterpress version. Personally, we love the onyx color theme with gold foil, but experiment with the assortment of shades and foil colors on offer as you please.

Talk about fancy. “Due to no ink being used, blind pressing is a very clean and simple way to create menus and can be used for a variety of designs,” says Teague, who appreciates that along with the minimalist design of the menus, they make the place settings look effortlessly “elevated.” Those looking for a custom order can message the seller with inquiries. FYI: a 50-quantity minimum is required for letterpress orders.

If you’re up for coordinating printing either through a local vendor or online shop like Prints of Love, consider this eye-catching square menu template. “Besides its unusual shape, I also love that the square menu doubles as a placecard, letting guests know which seat has been reserved for them,” says Teague of this budget-friendly pick.

What to Look For in Wedding Menu Invitations

Size: Mastriano says the optimal sizes for menu cards are either 5"x7" or 4"x9". As the wedding planner puts it, “these are both great options for not only making a statement on the plate when the guest first sits down, [but] also large enough to fit the meal details in a proper font size,” she says. Consider the understated yet elegant 5”x7” Tidal Stripe by Katharine Watson on Minted (from $52) or the 5”x7” Mountaintop by Paper Sun Studio on Minted (from $68) for alpine affairs.

Finish: Just like with your wedding invitations and other day-of paper goods, the paper type and finish matters. “You want to print your menu cards in a medium to heavy cardstock so it feels substantial to the touch and skip the glossy coating on the paper,” says Mastriano, adding that matte or uncoated paper feels more polished and won't pick up shine or fingerprints. On Zola, for example, shop for menus with “smooth,” “eggshell,” “linen,” “natural,” “double thick,” or “triple thick” selected as the paper type.

Skip the DIY: Unless you’re a design guru with ample time to invest in this project before your big day, it’s probably best to leave wedding menu cards to professional services. “A lot of couples who go the DIY route with menu cards will look over details such as too big or too small font sizing as well as the look and weight of the paper itself,” says Mastriano.

FAQ
  • Should you save your wedding menu cards?

Even if you think you’re not one for a whole box of tangible mementos from your wedding, your menu cards are one thing worth safeguarding as the tactile experience of holding your menu card and reading what guests dined upon will help awaken your senses and take you back to your wedding celebration. “Make sure that either you, your planner or even your paper designer save you a few copies of your personalized day-of paper goods, especially menu cards,” says Mastriano. “This way, you can store away somewhere safe or perhaps frame it in your kitchen as a special keepsake in your home forever.”

  • Are customized wedding menu cards best?

“I'm all about customization in every wedding detail,” says Campbell. If you can play with the colors, font sizes, foil options, and silhouettes of your wedding card, by all means, go for it. Websites like Zola and Minted make such deep levels of personalization a few clicks away.

  • Is splurging for letterpress wedding menu cards worth it?

Teague notes that letterpress is “very expensive,” still you might be able to score some deals (as we called out in the Etsy Typeset Creative Letterpress Wedding Menu above). This type of design also makes a statement, so you may be able to cut back on other day-of signage bespoke details to save on budget there. “Letterpress printing is a beautiful option for menus as it leaves a tactile and visual impression into the paper,” says Teague.
